Women with low doses of methadone, and not HIV positive are encouraged to breastfeed. Women with hepatitis C are usually able to breast feed, but you should see your doctor.
The benefits of breastfeeding are greater than the effect of the small amount of methadone that is the milk. Once the child between three and six months, and drank lots of milk, he or she receives large amounts of methadone. For this reason, the baby should be discontinued at this time either, or the mother should stop taking methadone. (Only mothers should stop methadone if you are sure not result in a return to drug use.)
